Maria Fowler suicide attempt: Towie star speaks for the first time since admitting she tried to kill herself

Tearful Towie star Maria Fowler has revealed for the first time how she tried to kill herself by downing pills saying: “I just wanted to escape.”

The sobbing former glamour model opened her heart to the Sunday People about her spiral into depression after claims she had been a high-class escort.

Stunning Maria ended up taking pills, texting pals in despair and collapsing in a park.

She said: “I felt so desperate. I didn’t want to die but I didn’t want to live. I felt like a caged animal. It was a cry for help – I didn’t have anyone to turn to.”

Luckily her friend called an ambulance which took her to hospital where she spent three days on a drip.

Now recovered from her ordeal two weeks ago, Maria, 26, deeply regrets her suicide bid and is urging others in trouble to seek help. She said: “There’s nothing glamorous about trying to kill yourself. It’s been the worst time of my life.

“Now I want to turn a negative into a positive and make sure it doesn’t happen to other people. I feel like I’ve been given a second chance.”
Maria was one of the stars of The Only Way Is Essex when, in October 2011, it was alleged she had jetted all over the world as a £600-an-hour escort and been showered with gifts from mega-rich men, including lawyers, bankers and sheikhs.

Maria strenuously denied it and insisted she had been a promotions girl for an exclusive agency in London.

She said: “From the moment those allegations came out my whole life changed.

“Before I was pretty happy, really enjoying my time on Towie and I had a great life. But afterwards everything got quite dark. I felt constantly anxious, as if there was a hand round my throat.

“As we filmed the Towie Christmas single I was screaming inside, like I was in a bubble.”

Maria felt the ITV2 show had not been supportive.

She said: “The production staff didn’t call me for 13 days after the allegations came out. They didn’t even answer the phone, I felt like I had lost everything, it was horrible.”

She also complained Towie bosses had tried arrange a romance with Sugar Hut club owner Mick Norcross, 50, even though she was dating footballer Lee Croft, 28, now playing for League One Oldham Athletic.

She left Towie in January last year after three series and became dependent on antidepressants.

Yet Maria missed life in front of the camera. She explained: “I was so busy on the show it masked all my feelings. When it stopped it got boring, like I was just existing.” Maria was able to stop taking her daily antidepressants while she and Lee enjoyed a stay in Scotland. But she was back on the medication when they split in March 2012.

But it was Maria’s move to Peterborough with boyfriend, ice-hockey player James Morgan, 28, which rekindled her suicidal thoughts. She felt lonely and isolated from her friends and family in Derby and unable to bond with James’ girl, aged four.

She said: “I love being with James, he’s been great for me but I didn’t know anyone and I spent a lot of time on my own. We had lots of drunken rows and said things we didn’t mean.”

Wiping away tears, Maria recalled: “I felt backed into a corner and I’d take it out on him. I felt very lost again.”

Two weeks ago she argued with James and stormed out of their home intending to end her life.

She said: “I don’t think he realised how serious it was. Tears were streaming down my face. I felt so desperate.” Maria took pills bought from three chemists. She said: “I was walking around in such a state. I’d no idea where I was. Originally I wanted to jump in front of a car but I couldn’t put someone through that.

“So I washed down the pills with cola and started wandering the streets. I sat in a woman’s driveway and she said ‘are you OK?’ I just said yes and then I scurried off.”

Maria answered a text from her best friend. She said: “I told him I didn’t want to be here any more and I’d taken a lot of pills. He called me and told me to be calm, stay still and wait there for an ambulance.”

Before it arrived Maria Googled the effects of overdosing on the tablets she had taken.

She discovered they can give victims organ failure and take weeks to kill someone.

Maria collapsed and was confused when the ambulance arrived to take her to A&E at Peterborough City Hospital, and was put on a drip.

“I was so scared. After they put me on the first drip I just started vomiting everywhere.

“I wanted to go home but they said if you go home your organs will fail. I was in bits.” On the third night she was discharged from hospital. Maria, who was not registered with a GP, said she had lacked the confidence to ask for help. She said: “People don’t support you with depression as it’s not a physical disability.

“I’m a big character and when people are around me they don’t see what I’m like when I’m on my own. People would say ‘you’ll be fine, you’ll get over it’.

“Only my mum Trudy said I needed to go back to the doctor.” Since the suicide bid Maria has been living quietly with her mum in Derby.

Maria, who has launched a tanning range and is doing TV and magazine work, said: “I’ve been looking on the internet and I don’t think there is a great deal of hospital after-care.

“When I had a cyst on my eye a few weeks ago they gave me loads of information about how to treat it.

“But for my depression and post overdose they didn’t.

“That’s a real issue, people think because you can’t see it that it isn’t there.”

Maria said: “I called NHS direct and the Samaritans. I felt I needed someone to help and not just listen, that’s the point I’m at now. I think there isn’t enough support.

“I want to use my experience to bring to light the way people can get support. I’ve a good family and friends but I felt I had no one.”

A spokesperson for Towie’s production company Lime Pictures said: “The welfare of our cast is of paramount importance. As part of our duty of care a psychologist is available to all cast should they need or require it.

“As well as seeking support from the production psych at the time, Maria was also supported by senior executives who had regular contact with her.

“Producers refute any claims that they encouraged a false relationship.

Katie Price on bringing up Harvey: I have to be cruel to be kind sometimes but he makes me laugh so much

With three kids and a fourth on the way, Katie Price knows all about the challenges of parenthood.

This pregnancy has been the toughest yet, and there has been no opportunity to enjoy a relaxing honeymoon period with new husband Kieran Haylor.

In fact, there must be times that builder Kieran wonders what on earth he has let himself in for.

Particularly as he helps mum Katie juggle work – she has recently released her latest novel and a new perfume, Kissable – with bringing up Harvey, 11, Junior, seven and five-year-old Princess.

But the greatest challenge for the family remains supporting Harvey, whose dad is footballer Dwight Yorke, as he struggles with a string of disabilities, including blindness.

He also has Prader-Willi syndrome, which means he is unable to control his eating. Some sufferers have been known to eat themselves to death.

As the years pass by this has clearly become increasingly distressing for Katie. “It is really tough at times,” she says.

“We’ve had to padlock the kitchen door now because Harvey doesn’t know when he’s full and he is desperate to get at the food.

"The syndrome he has means he feels hungry all the time so he’ll just eat and eat and eat.

“He goes downstairs in the early morning and I hear him kicking off and throwing things in the hallway because he can’t get to the food.

“So I have to say, ‘Harvey, come back up. You’ll get breakfast in a minute’... even though it’s probably only 5am.”

Harvey also has attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, autism and septo-optic dysplasia, which causes blindness.

On top of all this he has a growth hormone deficiency.

Yet despite all that Katie says her determination is to keep family life as normal as possible... and said that she finds it more challenging to deal with Junior and Princess, her two children with ex-husband Peter Andre.

“I’ll tick Harvey off just the same as I would Junior and Princess,” she says. “I do get tired though.

"I had a book signing the other week and I had to get up really early, but then Harvey got up in the middle of the night and started laughing uncontrollably. I don’t know why.

“I told him, ‘Come to bed with mummy.’ I love my cuddles with him, he’s my little Harvey-bear.

"So finally he settled and we went back to sleep for a few hours.”

It is fascinating to get a glimpse of the warm, loving mum who so often is hidden behind Katie’s tough, cool exterior.

“It’s so hard sometimes dealing with Harvey because I know he really wants the food but I have to be cruel to be kind and not let him have it.

“I just don’t want him to be obese. He’s so young and having all that weight is not healthy for him and his heart.

"I don’t let it make me cry though. Harvey is Harvey.”

Last week Katie revealed on Twitter just how much of a handful Harvey can be... and how forgiving she needs to be.

She wrote: “Boooo hoooooo Harvey just thrown all my perfumes out the window I’m gutted had such a collection... but I can’t get angry with him.”

And she recently revealed she wanted her son to live with her for ever, saying that he will always be by her side.

Katie has long hoped to open a free school in Kent, to cater for kids with his special needs.

At the moment he makes a three-hour round trip from the family home to a special-needs school in Wimbledon, South West London.

Life with Harvey appears, on the face of it, to be no laughing matter.

But Katie says that her son’s cheeky sense of humour means there is still a lot of fun in their home.

“That’s what’s so great about Harvey,” says Katie. “He just makes me laugh and laugh.

"The other day, when I went to Tesco, I was genuinely embarrassed.

"I put him in one of Kieran’s blue onesies – yes, Kieran has a onesie,” she laughs.

“And then I asked Harvey if he’d put his shoes on when we were in the car and he said, ‘yes mummy’.

“So we drove to the supermarket and when he got out I saw he’d put Kieran’s shoes on instead.

“He looked like he had massive flipper feet, and he was walking around like a penguin.”

Fortunately builder Kieran, 26, who Katie married in January, sounds used to the dramas that come with busy family life.

She says: “I have three kids and one of them has a disability and that’s very demanding.

"So I know I am very lucky for a man to put up with that situation.

“For him to accept that is so important. I couldn’t be with someone who wasn’t good with my kids.

“Kieran knows all about the job of being a parent... of having kids coming into your room late at night, wanting things and not going to bed. Most of all, though, he puts up with me,” she says with a devilish smile.

Even her grumbles – Katie says she’s constantly complaining about chronic back pain and anaemia during this pregnancy – are apparently like water off a duck’s back to her new husband.

“I keep telling him he’s a liar because I know I’m always moaning about those things and he says I’m not,” says Katie.

“He’s been with me at the doctor though so he knows the sciatica is genuine. I don’t know who’s more laidback – me or him.

“He’s a good man too. He goes to work, earns his own money. He’s not a ponce and I’ve been out with many ponces.

“I don’t read what people write about me and my relationship but let’s just say he was chasing me for a year before we started dating.

“I’m in a different place in my life too. I don’t want to get married again.

“My mum and dad are living with us at the moment while they’re getting their house done up and we all get on. We don’t argue – what’s the point?

"My brother Dan, who’s been with his wife Louise 19 years, has taught me that. It’s just so lovely and easy with Kieran.”

Katie’s due date is a closely guarded secret.

“It’s private,” she says, shuffling uncomfortably in her seat and admitting she hates her size – at 11 stone she’s over half a stone more than she was at full term in her other three pregnancies.

Judging from the size of her bump, the baby could come any day.

“See. It’s brewed,” she says, lifting up her top and pointing at her growing stomach.

“I reckon it could pop out unexpectedly.

"I’ve got this really strange feeling that something dramatic is going to happen with the birth because it’s felt like the weirdest ever pregnancy.”

Never underestimate the Pricey, eh Pricey?

Has George Clooney split from Stacy Keibler? Pair not seen in public together for three months

George Clooney’s romance with Stacy Keibler finally looked over last night after they spent one of America's biggest public holidays apart, the Sunday People can report.

They were thousands of miles from each other on Independence Day – firming speculation that the movie hunk has kissed goodbye to yet another beauty.

Clooney, 52, zoomed in his speedboat from his villa on Italy’s Lake Como to the exclusive Villa D’Este Hotel for a July 4 holiday party.

Meanwhile model Stacy, 35, posted online photos of herself partying in Malibu, California.

Clooney, who has not been seen in public with the blonde for three months, has refused to officially call time on their two-year relationship.

But friends say Hollywood’s most eligible bachelor, who has had a string of affairs since his divorce from actress Talia Balsam 20 years ago, has no plans to reunite with former professional wrestler Stacy.

An insider said: “It’s not like George and Stacy couldn’t find time to get together if they really wanted to.

“George is quietly backing away from the relationship. It’s always the same. As soon as he feels a woman is getting too close he pulls back.”

Rolling Stones at Hyde Park review: Five-star performance dripping with memorable moments

“Who was here in 1969?” asked Mick Jagger, referencing the Rolling Stones' historic Hyde Park show, held just two days after original guitarist Brian Jones’ death, at which a crowd estimated at a quarter of a million people turned up to pay their respects.

“Welcome back,” he said in response to those who stood with hands raised. “It’s nice to see you again.”

Back then, nobody had paid a penny to see the Stones; 44 years on, some tickets were changing prices for upwards of a thousand pounds.

Inevitably, the times, they have a changed.

And while a sizeable section of today’s audience weren’t even born the last time Mick and co ambled through Midnight Rambler here, the fact that they’d turned out in their thousands to tread in their parents’ sandal-steps speaks volumes about the band’s enduring appeal.

Things got off to a less than auspicious start.

Keith Richards fluffed not one, but two of opener Start Me Up’s opening three chords - a riff one suspects, given the number of times he’s played it, would be harder for him to play wrong than right.

Fortunately they proved to be the only bum notes of a near-immaculate set that not just recreated the previous weekend’s Glastonbury crowd-pleasing histrionics, but arguably surpassed them.

Richards looked more relaxed and far better dressed, trading licks and cigarette smoke with long-term sparring partner Ronnie Wood.

Drummer Charlie Watts was the epitome of insouciant cool, providing the rock-solid foundations from which the likes of It’s Only Rock ‘n’ Roll (But I Like It),  Honky Tonk Women and an epic Paint It Black were majestically constructed.

Melanie Sykes is 43 today: From Boddingtons ladette to super-fit pin up, her career in pictures

If only we looked like Melanie Sykes at 43. Scrap that, if only we looked like her now.

The former Boddingtons babe, lads' mag pin-up and TV presenter has been there, done that and posed in the saucy T-shirt.

Most recently, she caused a storm in a Twitter-shaped teacup by meeting a toyboy online, seducing him in less than 140 characters and swapping some sexy pics.

Turns out he wasn't a Syk-o and she ended up marrying him. Ah, young(ish) love...

Here's the gorgeous Mel and some of her best bits. Literally.

Tulisa, 5 bottles of vodka and some camel toe - she's landed in Ibiza! Check out all the latest News, Sport & Celeb gossip

Tulisa and her friend Chelsee Healey have just landed on the White Isle, but they've already racked up some hilarious holiday photos

Former N-Dubz star Tulisa Contostavlos got the party started early when she flew out to Ibiza with a big group of mates, including Waterloo Road / Strictly star Chelsee Healey.

The pair looked very tanned (pre-holiday spray, girls?) and also very excited as they caught a flight from Manchester to Ibiza.

Although as far as airport chic goes, Chelsee had some extremely bum-skimming shorts on and Tulisa had a bit of a camel toe situation going on with her high-waisted leggings.

And if you were wondering how Chelsee felt about her holiday, she wrote this on instagram:
"Did someone say Ibiza????? Oiiii oiiiii."
God, imagine getting stuck next to them on the flight?
Also accompanying them on the trip was Tulisa's PA/BFF Gareth Varey.

Tulisa had this to say on Twitter:
"It's about 2 pop ooooooooffffffff #ibizab**ch."
And from the looks of the pictures Tulisa and Gareth got stuck into the mini-beverages on the flight, with five mini-vodkas between them. Not bad for a flight that lasts about 90 minutes.
The former X-Factor judge showed off her new hair colour and looked happy despite her recent arrest scandal .
Only five weeks ago, Tulisa and Chelsee were in Marbella together.
Those two get around don't they?

Caroline Flack, Cara Delevingne and other celebs rock out at The Rolling Stones Hyde Park gig

A whole load of famous Rolling Stones fans headed to Hyde Park to see the last date of their 50&Counting tour.
Tess and Vernon had obviously booked a babysitter for a pretty awesome 'date night'.
As had Lara Stone and David Walliams, having one of their first nights out since their baby son was born in May.
Although Cara Delevingne only saw The Stones last weekend at Glastonbury, she was back for more.
Caroline Flack, Holly Willoughby, Gemma Arterton and Jameela Jamil were all there too.
None of whom were even born the last time The Stones played Hyde Park, in 1969.
Our backstage spies reveal Hollywood A-lister Bradley Cooper and his 18-year-old model girlfriend Suki Waterhouse turned up only 15 minutes before the encore. That's a bit fashionably late guys.
And Cara was seen swapping modelling tips with Lara Stone.
Meanwhile David Walliams tweeted:
"I saw @RollingStones play Hyde Park tonight. The most rock & roll moment? Boris Johnson going past me on a golf cart."
Hmm...we're guessing the last Stones gig in Hyde Park was a bit different.
Let's look at all the A-listers who danced about to Brown Sugar shall we?

Gunn signs on for Guardians of the Galaxy

Director James Gunn has confirmed that he's to helm an adaptation of the comic book series 'Guardians of the Galaxy' for the Marvel film studio.

He'll write as well as direct the feature, which will be set in a slightly more unusual superhero story world than recent Marvel properties.

[Related story: The next Avengers? Guardians of the Galaxy announced]

Among the team of galactic defenders are Rocket Raccoon, a laser-toting, genetically engineered raccoon, and Groot, an extraterrestrial plant monster.

Gunn could be well-suited to the offbeat material, however, with dark, superhero satire 'Super' already under his belt.

Joss Whedon, also now working heavily with Marvel following 'Avengers Assemble', reckons he's the man for the job.

“He has a very twisted take on it, but it all comes from a real love for the material,” he said last week. “It’s going to be hard for the humans to keep up. I know he’s going to come from left field and I’m going to go, ‘What?’ And then, ‘Of course, why didn’t I think of that?’ And then I’m going to beat him!”

Among the other members of the Guardians are Star-Lord, a former NASA astronaut turned galactic crimefighter, Drax the Destroyer, a cohort of Iron Man, and Gamora, an powerful alien who is the last of her species.

It's thought that the film may introduce Marvel villain Thanos, briefly spotted in 'Avengers Assemble', who is also likely to feature in 'Avengers Assemble 2'.

Joseph Gordon - Levitt for Guardians of the Galaxy lead ?

Joseph Gordon-Levitt is reportedly now in the mix for the lead role in new Marvel Comics adaptation 'Guardians of the Galaxy'.

According to industry site Deadline, the 'Dark Knight Rises' star is now among the actors being pursued to play Peter Quill, aka Star-Lord.

[Related story: Gunn signs on for Guardians of the Galaxy]

It had previously been reported that 'Cloud Atlas' star Jim Sturgess and 'Chuck's Zachary Levi were among the front-runners to take the role, while Joel Edgerton from 'Warrior' and Jack Huston from 'Boardwalk Empire' are also thought to have screen-tested.

It's not the first time in recent months that Gordon-Levitt has been linked to a superhero role.

Before Christmas, he was rumoured to be up for playing Batman in the forthcoming 'Justice League' film.

If he bags the role of US astronaut-turned-cosmic-hero Quill, he'll be under the charge of 'Super' director James Gunn, who is set to helm the project.

It's certainly among the more unusual superhero franchises in the offing, however.

Alongside Quill is a crew comprising a giant tree-like creature called Groot and the laser-toting Rocket Raccoon, an intelligent superhero raccoon.

Marvel want Adam Sandler and Jim Carrey for Guardians of the Galaxy

Marvel is reportedly circling Adam Sandler and Jim Carrey for the forthcoming screen adaptation of 'Guardians of the Galaxy'.

It's not known whether the film arm of the infamous comic book publisher is looking to cast both actors, but Latino Review – which has scooped a number of Marvel exclusives in the past – reckons that the 'availability' of Sandler and Carrey is being scrutinised.

They join a raft of talent being assessed for roles in the film of the leftfield comic which is being directed by James Gunn, who helmed the darkly amusing 'Super'.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt is among those said to be up for the lead role of Peter Quill, aka 'Star-Lord', an intergalactic combat strategist, along with 'Cloud Atlas' star Jim Sturgess, Zachary Levi from 'Chuck', Jack Huston from 'Boardwalk Empire', and Joel Edgerton from 'Warrior'.

Meanwhile, the comic book has potentially comedic, most likely motion-capture roles suitable for either a Carrey or a Sandler, including that of Rocket Raccoon, an anthropomorphic alien raccoon with a laser blaster, or Groot, a giant alien tree creature.

The film is due for Summer 2014.

Pratt confirmed to play lead in Guardians of the Galaxy

Chris Pratt is set to play Peter Quill, aka Star-Lord, in the forthcoming big screen version of 'Guardians of the Galaxy'.

The star of films including 'Moneyball', 'Zero Dark Thirty' and US sitcom 'Parks and Recreation' will take on the role of the astronaut-turned-galactic warrior in the Marvel Comics adaptation.

[Related story: Marvel wants Adam Sandler and Jim Carrey for Guardians of the Galaxy]

It was a hotly contested role, with the likes of 'Cloud Atlas's Jim Sturgess, Zachary Levi from 'Chuck', John Krasinski from 'The Office' and 'Boardwalk Empire' star Jack Huston all thought to be in the running.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt was also linked, but turned it down over other scheduling commitments, namely the 'Sin City' sequel 'Sin City 2: A Dame To Kill For'.

The film is set to be directed by James Gunn, who helmed the offbeat vigilante comedy 'Super'.

One of the more edgy properties in the Marvel canon, it follows a group of alien heroes, including Drax the Destroyer, deadly female warrior Gamora, a tree creature called Groot and Rocket Racoon, a genetically engineered racoon with a love for weaponry.

News emerged last week that Adam Sandler and Jim Carrey are being sought for roles too.

It's set for release in the summer of 2014.

Edgar Wright talks new comic adaptation Ant-Man

'Shaun of the Dead' director Edgar Wright has been talking up his plans for forthcoming Marvel Comics adaptation 'Ant-Man'.

Speaking to IGN, he said: “It’s a way of doing a superhero film within another genre. I wanted to tell an origin tale in a slightly different way. It’s part of the Marvel cinematic universe, but it also feels like its own piece.”

The project has been planned for some time, but Wright says he was keen to finish his 'Blood and Ice Cream' trilogy with Simon Pegg first, comprising 'Shaun of the Dead', 'Hot Fuzz' and the forthcoming 'The World's End'.

“I’ve been collaborating with (Marvel Studios boss) Kevin Feige during the whole of that cycle. Part of it is because I wanted to make two other movies first. I wanted to make 'World’s End'.

“Me and Simon [Pegg] were very keen to make it and it felt like it was unfinished business and we wanted to wrap up the trilogy. The script came together really fast. Well not really fast, but it came together at a certain point where it was like ‘I really want to do this next'.

“But to be honest, the later I do it, it feels like I could learn more, especially about special effects. It’s a big effects movie, so I’m pleased to go into it having done 'Scott Pilgrim' and 'The World’s End' because you’re always learning more about that side.”

[Related story: Pratt to play lead in Guardians of the Galaxy]

The 'Ant-Man' script is reportedly finished, having been written by Wright and frequent collaborator Joe Cornish.

It's thought that it will include both characters Henry Pym, the first Ant-Man, and then flash-forward in time to Scott Lang, the second man to take on the insect alter-ego.

Pym is a biophysicist who discovers a chemical substance which allows him to shrink in size. Lang then stole Pym's suit, but after reforming from a life of crime, became a member of The Avengers and an affiliate of the Fantastic Four.

The film is due in November, 2015.

Meanwhile, 'The World's End' is due out in the summer, starring Pegg, Nick Frost, Paddy Considine, Eddie Marsan and Martin Freeman as friends on a nostalgic pub crawl who discover the world is about to end.
